Hexagens in everyday life.
Hexagons are everywhere, not only in nature but in engineering, too. Take nuts and bolts. If they were circular in form, it would be considerably harder for tools to grip them. What the hexagonal shape results in is a greater tightening effect when they’re screwed together, and this is precisely why the shape has prevailed throughout the centuries since its invention in the 1700s.

And if you look more closely at a football, you’ll make the discovery that it’s made up of a combination of hexagons and pentagons, stuck together. This allows for the dense packing together of the individual pieces which make up the ball. When stitched together, they create the ball’s -almost - spherical structure.

The majority of pencils, too, are hexagonally shaped. This could be to do with the prevention of rolling pencils falling off the edges of tables, but it could also be to do with grip. Additionally, they can be stacked together without wasting space during the manufacturing process.
