Jane Austen (1775-1817) was bom in Steventon, a small village in the south of England. Her father was a clergyman and he was a very kind, handsome man. Her mother was beautiful and all the Austen children were very good-looking like their parents.
Jane was the seventh of eight children. She had six brothers but only one sister, Cassandra, who was two years older. The two sisters were very close.




Abuse and addiction.
Drug abuse has been a serious problem all over the world for a very long time. Abuse means taking drugs for a non medical purpose. Drugs can include nicotine, alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opium and many other substances. According to a UN survey, there are over 50 million regular users of heroin, cocaine and synthetic drugs all over the world. Drug abuse often leads to criminal behaviour. In the UK crime, absenteeism and sickness caused by drug abuse cost £2 billion every year.

The abuse of drugs can lead to physical, psychological and social problems. The brain of addicted people changes, because these drugs can damage the brain. And it is impossible to predict how somebody will react to the use of drugs, so it is also impossible to predict how long it will take them to become addicts. Drug abusers and alcohol addicts are more likely to commit suicide than other people (especially during their adolescence), because of social isolation and the intoxicating effects of drugs. About 30% of the suicides in the USA are connected to alcohol abuse. The symptoms caused by drug abuse can be similar to those of mental illness (for example depression, panic attacks, change in mood and psychosis) and in some cases these symptoms can continue for a long time - maybe years - even if a person has stopped taking drugs.
