This volume, Book 2 of Russian Through Propaganda, is the continuation of Book 1, and constitutes a second semester’s worth of intensive Russian language material. More information concerning this series, including its overall approach to the language and tips for using it, can be found in the introduction to Book 1. The series will continue with two volumes of second-year material, entitled Russian Through Poems and Paintings, which will turn from the Soviet era to the history and culture of the Imperial period.

Hard and soft consonants.
According to spelling conventions, a consonant is soft (that is, palatalized) when followed by: и, e, ё, ю, я or ь. How do we pronounce a soft consonant? Tongue position is key! The position required for softening is the same one used to pronounce the vowel “и” or the consonant “Й.” Without letting your tongue drop from this position, allow it to glide just enough to pronounce the given consonant.

While a soft sound is related phonetically to its hard counterpart, it must be thought of as a distinct, single sound — not, for example, as the “hard consonant” plus a “y” sound (as in “n-yet” or, using Cyrillic, “н-йет”).
