A little black doll.
One evening the Marshalls were going to the concert at the Harbour Hotel. The talk at the tea table was all about it. Everybody was going but Little Joyce who had to stay with her elder sister Denise. Denise was seriously ill and was lying quietly in her bed upstairs. That day she was the most excited of all because it was her lifelong dream to hear Ms Laurin, a great singer.

Little Joyce would also like to go to the concert because she wanted to be able to tell Denise all about it. But she knew Grandmother Marshall would not allow her because she did not like Little Joyce. She thought her to be awkward, plain and thin. Besides, the family disapproved of the girl’s mother who married a poor man and died young.

Little Joyce knew it but wished Grandmother Marshall would love her some day, too. The only person who really loved Little Joyce was Denise. Besides, Little Joyce had a little black doll her father had brought from Egypt. Father said it was very old and had previously been the toy ot a Pharaohs daughter. Little Joyce kept it as a keepsake and never gave it to anyone.

The next morning the family kept talking about the wonderful Ms Laurin and did not notice that Denise was much worse. In the afternoon, however, the doctor was sent for. He arrived, examined Denise and said gravely she would not live the next few days. With tears on her face, Little Joyce went up to her room. She suddenly had a plan.

She put her dear black doll in a box, tiptoed downstairs not to be noticed, and ran to the Harbour Hotel. In the lobby she noticed a lady with a beautiful face and wonderful eyes. In spite of her natural shyness Little Joyce asked the lady if she knew the best way to see Ms Laurin. The lady wondered, smiling, what favour Ms Laurin could do for her.
