   Данный словарь - переиздание „Словаря американских идиом”, вышедшего в 1987 г. в издательстве „Нэшнл Текстбук Компани” (США).
Словарь содержит около 8 тыс. устойчивых словосочетаний английского языка, употребительных в США, с их толкованиями и примерами, иллюстрирующими их употребление в речи. В конце словаря дан алфавитный указатель слов и словосочетаний.
Словарь предназначен для специалистов в области английского языка, для переводчиков, для изучающих английский язык на продвинутом этапе.
Распространяется только на территории СССР.

I am in Arizona in an area of the USA that is very near to Mexico. This is where the Yuma Native Americans live. There are about five hundred thousand Native American Indians in the USA. They are in different groups like the Yuma, Iroquois and Sioux and they speak about one hundred different languages. They don’t live a really traditional lifestyle now. Some live in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Others live in special Native American areas but they have modern homes.

‘I love living with the circus. I have a lot of fun, but I also work really hard. I work long hours and I don’t have any free time at the weekend. I only have one day off a week when I can go out with my friends.
The day begins very early for the circus. I’m not a morning person - I hate getting up early. But I need to practise a lot because I’m still training. So, on a typical day, I get up at 6 a.m. and go jogging before breakfast. I practise for about eight hours every day, and then we do a show in the evening.

I was talking to my grandparents recently and I found out that when they were teenagers, they were rockers. This was in the 1950s and rock'n’roll was something new and exciting. My grandfather used slick his hair back and wear pointy-toed shoes. My grandmother would wear dresses with tight waists full skirts. They hung out with other rockers and went to dances on Saturday nights. It’s odd to think grandparents as being young and cool!

In 1950, Linda Brown was seven years old. To get to school, she had a long, dangerous walk of over one kilometre to a bus stop. There, she had to wait for the bus to take her the rest of the way. That's not too surprising as lots of children have to travel to school by bus. What was surprising was that there was another school much nearer to her home which she wanted to go to but couldn't. Why was that?
