In the time of King Arthur there lived in Cornwall a farmer who had only one son: Jack, the farmer’s son, was a very clever young man and he always knew what to say and what to do.
In that part of England there was a mountain called the Mount of Cornwall. A huge giant, whose name was Cormoran, lived there in a cave. He was very strong and cruel and he kept all the people of Cornwall in terror. When he wanted food he went to one of the neighbouring towns or villages and carried away six or more cows. This went on for many years, and nobody could do anything because the giant was too strong.
