Introduction.
About Language to go.

Many adult students of English have a limited amount of time for their studies. They may require English for both professional and social reasons, and are also aware that they're likely to use it in a number of international situations. They need to ensure that the time they spend on their English learning is highly focused and goal oriented. They need to be able to achieve certain tasks and to leave a language class, sometimes after a busy and tiring day of working or studying, with a bite-sized chunk of Language to go and a sense of 'Yes, I can do that - anywhere in the world, in English!' Language to go is a short course for this kind of adult student. Our underlying principle is that students start the class with an objective defined in terms of a realistic outcome, and finish with the language they need to achieve it.

Phonemic symbols.

The symbols in this chart represent the sounds used in standard British English and some of the most common variations in American English. We have used the symbols in the Teaching notes to help clarify pronunciation points dealt with in the lesson. We have not included them in the Students' Book, because we feel it is not always easy or practical to teach them on a short course or a course involving continuous enrolment. However, you may find it useful to introduce certain symbols to students to help them with their individual pronunciation needs. If you do, we would recommend that you:
• only teach a few symbols at a time - little and often;
• get students to practise the sounds, but do not aim for perfection -a comprehensible approximation is good enough;
• relate the symbols to words which students already know.
