London, Jack (1876-1916) - A self-educated American adventure novelist who was a sailor, a tramp, and a gold miner before he began his writing career.
His work had constant themes of survival and compassion for the underdog. Sea Wolf (1904) - The adventures of Humphrey Van Weydon, a ship-wrecked literary critic, and his rescuer, Wolf Larsen, the ruthless captain of the Ghost. The two main characters are often said to represent the opposing sides of London’s own personality in this highly regarded tale of the sea.
