   American English File motivates students to speak by providing them with varied and motivating tasks, and the language (grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation) that they need in order to communicate with confidence. In addition to the Communication activities at the back of the book, students are encouraged to speak throughout the lesson, responding to texts and listenings, and practicing grammar and vocabulary orally.

If you've learned American English and you're traveling in Britain, or if you've learned British English and you're traveling in the US, you'll notice some differences. An obvious difference is the accent, but most travelers find that they don't have too many problems with this. There are some grammatical differences, but they shouldn't make it difficult to understand people, or to communicate. That leaves differences in vocabulary, which can cause misunderstandings. Sometimes the difference is only the spelling, for example, in American English center, color, and traveled, and in British English centre, colour, and travelled. But sometimes the word is completely different in American and British English, so it's a good idea to be prepared.

To find out when the World Wide Web began, we first need to look at the Internet. The origins of the Internet go back to the space race of the 1950s. After the Russians sent the satellite Sputnik into space, Americans wanted to develop their own technology further, so they set up ARPA - the Advanced Research Projects Agency. This agency found a way of connecting computers, which they called ARPANET. In 1974, they changed its name to the internetwork or Internet for short.

What do Pre-intermediate students need?

Pre-intermediate students are at a crucial stage in their learning. The novelty of being a beginner may have worn off, but the goal of communicating with ease and fluency can still feel a long way off. Students at this level more than ever need material that maintains their enthusiasm and builds their confidence. They need to know how much they are learning and what they can now achieve. At the
same time they need the encouragement to push themselves to use the new language that they are learning.
