Last weekend, somebody bought a lottery ticket, chose all the correct numbers and won millions. How lucky! Or maybe not In the 1970s, scientists at the University of Illinois studied lottery winners and compared their levels of happiness with other people. The results were interesting. The winners felt delighted for a short time, but after that, their happiness returned to normal levels. A similar study by the University of California in 2006 gave the same results. They looked at lottery winners six months after their win and found completely normal levels of happiness. And for a few unlucky people, о huge lottery win was the start of major problems Alex Toth, for example, won S13 million in 1990. He stopped working, spent the money quickly and had terrible arguments with his family and friends.

A teacher spotted Rene Silva's talent for writing when he was just eleven and encouraged him to set up a community newspaper. Rene accepted the challenge and took on publishing Voz da Comunidade (Voice of the Community) and he soon realised that the monthly newspaper could help his neighbourhood. However, Rene’s neighbourhood isn't just any neighbourhood. Rene lives on the edge of Rio de Janeiro in a favela, a poor town that used to be controlled by aimed drug gangs. Rene’s newspaper quickly became a vehicle for protest about the poor conditions in the faveia and gave a voice to local residents who were campaigning to make the community a safer and better place to live.

English-Haitian Creole Bilingual Dictionary, Valdman А., Moody M., Davies T., 2017
English-Haitian Creole Bilingual Dictionary, Valdman А., Moody M., Davies T., 2017.
Haitian Creole (HC) is spoken by approximately 11,000,000 persons in Haiti and in diaspora communities in the United States and throughout the Caribbean. Thus, it is of great utility to Anglophone professionals engaged in various activities—medical, social, educational, welfare— in these regions. As the most widely spoken and best described creole language, a knowledge of its vocabulary is of interest and utility to scholars in a variety of disciplines. The English-Haitian Creole Bilingual Dictionary (EHCBD) aims to assist anglophone users in constructing written and oral discourse in HC; it also will aid HC speakers to translate from English to their language. As the most elaborate and extensive linguistic tool available, it contains about 30 000 individual entries, many of which have multiple senses and include subentries, multiword phrases or idioms. The distinguishing feature of the EHCBD is the inclusion of translated sentence-length illustrative examples that provide important information on usage.
